There are two types of treatment for cold sores – those that merely relieve symptoms and those that contain antiviral medicine that penetrate to block the cause of the sore.
  • Symptom Relief
The first type of therapy, which is available over the counter, treats only the symptoms of a cold sore once it appears. This type includes products that relieve dryness and soften the sores (e.g. medicated lip balm), and those that provide temporary relief from pain and itching (e.g. over-the-counter topical creams containing anesthetics).

  • Antiviral Medicine
Denavir® (penciclovir cream) is an antiviral medicine for cold sores that is available by a prescription from your physician or dentist. It penetrates the area to block the virus that causes cold sores. Denavir® works best when it’s applied during the early signs of a cold sore – at the tingle or when a blister appears. If you are a regular sufferer, ask your physician or dentist if Denavir® might be right for you.
