Between work, family, and housework, it's easy to get run down. Fatigue is common among American adults, and it can be detrimental to physical and emotional health. It makes sense, then, that fatigue is widely regarded as one of the major causes of cold sore outbreaks, largely because it weakens the immune system. Feeling sluggish during the day is a good indication that you may need to rearrange your schedule to allow for more sleep, rest, and "alone time." Being well rested and refreshed will help you feel healthier overall, and can reduce the number of cold sores outbreaks you experience.

These suggestions may help you cut down on fatigue.
  • Read or listen to music to relax before falling asleep at night.
  • Establish a regular exercise routine. Inactivity can be a major cause of fatigue.
  • Try to keep your bedtime regular.
  • Avoid caffeine six hours before bedtime, and alcohol and smoking one to two hours before bedtime.
  • If you're mind is racing, take a walk, warm bath, or listen to soothing music. Try to focus on relaxing.
  • A short nap in the afternoon may help to rejuvenate the body and mind, although you shouldn't sleep for longer than an hour.
  • If you feel as though you can never get enough rest, consult your physician.
